Faster calculation of detailed 3ds objects

Whether for furniture, decoration or plants, many lighting designers use 3ds objects in DIALux projects in order to present the plans more vividly. Depending on their number or size, these objects have a great influence on the calculation time of a project. To save calculation time and to improve the visualization of the objects, our developers have implemented a new calculation method for the DIALux evo 9 version (available from mid-year).
 

Well-proven photon shooter method

The current method in DIALux makes it possible to determine the illumination of whole buildings, including outdoor scenes while taking reflective and transparent materials into account. The results of light scenes are collected separately, and the luminaire groups used can be adjusted later in terms of dimming status and light colour. Of importance for the user are short calculation times, memory utilization, and plausible, accurate results. The photon shooter method used here is well-proven and undergoes continuous improvement.

Complex objects with numerous small surfaces are, however, a real challenge for the method used up to now. Since it is not possible to guarantee that such surfaces are always hit by virtual photons, these are often displayed in black. This has no influence on the accuracy of the general results but leads, nevertheless, to displeasing representations of the scene. Moreover, these small surfaces slow down the collection of results and the subsequent dimming of luminaire scenes in light scenes.
 

Enhancement and acceleration of previous calculation method

In DIALux evo 9 the previous calculation method is enhanced by a special process which takes detailed objects into special account. This is not only of benefit for the calculation speed and subsequent adjustments of light scenes but also leads to a general improvement in the presentation of detailed objects with many surfaces in CAD.

Unlike the results achieved with the setting »Simplified illumination of furniture and objects«, with this enhanced method the lighting effect on the object surfaces should be displayed as realistically as possible. Therefore, the new calculation method improves, in particular, the visualization of a scene.
