Lighting Designer Tom Van Roey on DIALux

Tom Van Roey as the owner of T-VR (Technieken Van Roey), offers services like drafting electrical specification dossiers (for engineering firms and architects) and lighting studies and designs (mainly for manufacturers). As an accredited of the DIALux trainer network, Tom also gives DIALux evo trainings in English and Dutch.

»I was fascinated with DIALux evo when I started to look for a lighting design software for my projects«, says Tom Van Roey, the certified DIALux evo trainer from Belgium.

In 2013 when he was working for an engineering company, it struck him that lighting was an integral part of the planning phase. Therefore he began to look for a tool to assist him with his projects. Because its intuitive usability, DIALux evo then attracted Tom's attention. Soon he began to use it exclusively, even though back then DIALux evo was still in its infancy when compared to the standard DIALux version.

»As a lighting designer, I handle a variety of projects ranging from indoor and outdoor to retail and industrial projects. In DIALux evo I found an amazing tool that delivers what gets the job done properly.«

Until now, Tom has accumulated a lot of successful projects, most of them being complex architecture with a significant amount of detail – undoubtedly complex tasks.

»I find myself in different roles at work, either working part-time for a manufacturer or as a freelancer for other companies. DIALux evo enables an easy workflow, based on its intuitive controls and the competence to create both indoor and outdoor scenes in a single project«, Tom says.

»Renderings of the designs are one of the most important parts and that was also how I reeled in my customers«.

Let’s have a look at some of Tom's projects:

Macobo Engineering Company, Belgium – An existing building that needs some renovation with minimum demolition.

»As you can see, the building has a concrete roof that shall be kept visible, all roofs are flat and the first floor was only covered a small part of the entire ground floor. To meet its original condition was a bit challenging.«

Tom positioned all luminaires that cover or start from the holes where the old wirings were.

Outside and inside, Tom also used many RGB luminaires in his design; for instance cove lighting fixtures set to green, to match Macobo's corporate identity.

De Mispelaer is a senior residency were the flats are in demand. All kinds of services for the needs of elderly are met.

»DIALux evo made this project very easy to handle, by giving me intermediate results after placing luminaires«, says Tom. Through rendering, people can quickly identify if there is enough light in active areas.

On top of that, making residents feel safe and comfortable even during nighttime is an issue, so lighting aids these special requirements.

Wim Pau, Belgium. »Designing and separating light scenes were the essential tasks for this project. With the help of DIALux evo, it was easy to duplicate the light scene and switch the luminaires on or off.«

Tom uses artificial light together with daylight at different times of a day.

Some lights are on during evening time.

Additionally to designing the lighting concept in the warehouse, Tom also adopted the style to other rooms varying it by their functionality. After creating the ray tracing, we can clearly see the reflection on the floor, which makes the simulation of the room appear close to reality.

After office hours, the design offers different possibilities as below. One can tell that Tom has a lot of experiences with diverse projects. Most importantly, he has good taste in design and takes care of details.

During the interview, Tom has shared experiences dealing with complex cut-outs and roofs which should be improved. Tom added a more flexible documentation as well as some new functions to the DIALux's development wish list.

As DIALux is a software that keeps up with the times, DIAL will continuously react to our users and the market.
