The right light for all spheres of life

Light influences our mood, creates a feeling of well-being and affects our biorhythm. This makes it all the more important to optimize light within our own four walls so that it is perfectly attuned to our own needs. A client in Dortmund has recognized this and has asked DIAL to design the lighting and the lighting control in his newly built house. First of all, during the planning phase, the perfect light to fulfil the requirements of the users was defined and adapted to the modern architecture of the building. Only after this process was the lighting control planned. Lighting design and control are planned holistically for both the interior and exterior areas of the building.

Good light needs good lighting control

To design the lighting control as intuitively as possible the designers at DIAL defined and specified a total of 22 lighting scenes. The luminaires in the individual scenes are tuned to each other in such a way that they provide functionality while, at the same time, pursuing aesthetic standards in lighting. All the scenes are logically interlocking. That means that the light sources are used more than once in different scenes.
Per scene there are two variants, depending on the time of day and the level of brightness. Sensors outside the house measure the brightness and can transmit a signal to the lighting control unit so that the luminous intensity can be adjusted accordingly, if required.

All the scenes can, however, also be dimmed manually by the user per push button.
Operation is via scene buttons in the wall which enable intuitive control of the light with self-explanatory symbols. The designers at DIAL have placed their trust in KNX as a bus protocol. To achieve this, functions were specifically adapted in order to call up a light scene and dim via a rocker switch.

Simplifying the client's life

And this is how it works: If, for example, the client wishes to prepare his evening meal, he can select the »Cooking« scene. Then the kitchen area is illuminated with accents to enable optimal light for working on the cooking surface. The right atmosphere is created by spots which highlight the painting on the wall. Since this an open-plan sitting-room/kitchen, the space beyond the kitchen was not left out of consideration and is included in the  light scene »Cooking«, thus ensuring that the complete room is experienced.
A further example is the illumination of the entrance area. The scene »Entrance« is functional and at the same time aesthetic. The luminaires are arranged in such a way that the client can find his jacket in the cloakroom with no problem while, at the same time, accents are placed on the mirrors. The luminaires on the periphery create an inviting atmosphere and provide orientation in the entrance area.
