The Master of Lighting Design is made up of different modules which take place both in Detmold and Lüdenscheid. The course of study is divided into basic modules, project modules and elective modules and is intended for a specific circle of students. An overview.

The course of study Master of Lighting Design is intended for graduates with a first degree (Bachelor, Diploma or comparable degree) in interior design or other creative, planning or engineering science disciplines (e.g. architecture, town planning, electrical engineering, industrial design and art or civil or mechanical engineering), with professional experience in planning of buildings and interiors or in light planning and lighting design.

The master's course is conducted according to a clear international orientation and prepares the students explicitly for activities beyond Germany, in Europe and other parts of the world. All lectures and seminars are held in English.

Students who do not fulfil these requirements may nevertheless register for certain modules. Instead of a master's degree such students will be awarded a certificate »Graduate Diploma in Lighting Design«.

To underline the high practical and research orientation and the interdisciplinary aspect of this course of study, the final examinations for the master's course are conducted together with an external partner or with another faculty of study.

The course of study Master Lighting Design leads to the academic degree of Master of Science (M.Sc.).

The professional fields which are open to the graduates of the course Master of Lighting Design include independent architectural, engineering and planning offices, companies within the lighting and luminaire industry, research institutes and universities. Furthermore, special technological fields of work  such as the examination of current software applications and simulation techniques in lighting design, research into new production methods, design and material innovations for luminaires and lamps, the importance of visual comfort in indoor and outdoor spaces and the potential within illumination and lighting for improving energy efficiency.

Registration requirements:
Bachelor or Diploma, Portfolio, letter of motivation proof of knowledge of English, professional experience, interview where appropriate  

Application procedure:

The costs for the course of study leading to a master's degree amount to 7.000,- EUR per semester, thus a total of 14.000 EUR.

The course of study begins in the winter semester 2018. Application must be made by 30 October of the previous year, submitting the required documents. You can obtain the application forms here.

Certificate course:
For applicants with no previous degree but with the appropriate training and professional experience the modules are offered as a certificate course leading to »Graduate Diploma in Lighting Design«.
